College life can get expensive very quickly. Tuition, books, food, transportation, rent, and other daily expenses can take a big part of a student’s budget. So it makes sense for students to look for discounts wherever they can. Netflix does not currently offer a special student discount in the United States. Netflix’s official U.S. pricing does not list a student plan. Instead, customers choose from its regular subscription plans.
That does not mean students have no way to keep Netflix costs under control. A student may use a lower-cost Netflix plan, share a household account according to Netflix’s rules, or decide whether a parent should pay for the subscription. Let’s look at how Netflix works and what parents and college students should know.
Does Netflix Have a Student Discount?
As of 2026, Netflix does not list a dedicated Netflix student discount in the United States. Netflix offers regular membership plans rather than pricing based on whether someone attends college. Your student ID does not give you a lower Netflix price.
This differs from some services that create special student memberships. Netflix’s official U.S. plans are based on features such as ads, video quality, downloads, and the number of devices that can watch at the same time. So if a website claims that Netflix has an official permanent student discount, check the information carefully before entering your payment details.
How Much Does Netflix Cost for Students?
Netflix currently lists three main U.S. plans:
| Netflix plan | Monthly price | Main features |
| Standard with ads | $8.99 | 1080p, ads, 2 supported devices |
| Standard | $19.99 | 1080p, no ads, 2 devices |
| Premium | $26.99 | 4K + HDR, no ads, up to 4 devices |
These are the prices Netflix currently publishes for the United States. Taxes may apply depending on where you live. The Standard with ads plan can be the simplest way to keep the monthly cost lower. However, the cheapest plan may not suit everyone. A student who strongly dislikes ads or wants 4K video may prefer another option.
Standard With Ads
The Standard with Ads plan costs $8.99 per month in the U.S.
It offers 1080p video and allows viewing on two supported devices at the same time. Netflix says this plan includes commercial breaks in most TV shows and movies. A small number of titles may also be unavailable because of licensing restrictions. For a student watching Netflix occasionally, this lower monthly price may make more sense than paying for a premium plan.
1. Standard
The regular Standard plan costs $19.99 per month.
It provides 1080p video without ads and allows viewing on two supported devices at the same time. Netflix also allows one extra member on this plan, subject to its rules and an additional charge. A student who watches Netflix frequently may prefer this option if avoiding ads matters more than keeping the monthly bill as low as possible.
2. Premium
Premium costs $26.99 per month.
It includes 4K Ultra HD and HDR, no ads, downloads on more devices, and viewing on up to four supported devices at the same time. Netflix also allows up to two extra members on this plan under its current rules.
Premium may provide more features than they actually need for a student living alone.
Do Parents Have to Pay for Their Child’s Netflix?
Parents do not have to pay for Netflix just because their child is a student. The person who creates the Netflix membership chooses the payment method and pays the monthly subscription. A parent may decide to pay for a child’s Netflix subscription as part of the family’s entertainment budget. Another family may ask the student to pay for it themselves. There is no Netflix rule that makes parents financially responsible for a student’s subscription. The decision usually comes down to the family’s budget and agreement.
Can a Student Use Their Parents’ Netflix Account?
This is where Netflix’s current account-sharing rules matter. Netflix says an account is intended for people who live together in the same household. Netflix defines a household around the devices connected to the internet at the main residence where the account is used.
That means parents should not assume that their college student can permanently use the family Netflix account from a separate home just because the parent pays the bill.
For example, imagine a family lives in Ohio, and their college student moves into an apartment in California.
The student may no longer qualify as part of the same Netflix household simply because the parent owns the account. Netflix provides an extra member option on eligible plans for people who do not live in the main household. Extra members get their own account and password, but the person who invited them pays for the membership. The availability and cost of this option depend on the plan.
Can Parents Add a College Student as an Extra Member?
Netflix currently allows eligible Standard and Premium plans to add people who do not live in the main household as extra members.
The current U.S. pricing page lists extra-member pricing at:
- $7.99 per month with ads
- $9.99 per month without ads
The exact option depends on the main Netflix plan and other account conditions. This can be useful for a college student who lives away from home. Instead of giving the student the parent’s main Netflix login, an extra member receives their own account and password.
Does a Student Need Their Own Netflix Account?
A student living at home with their parents can use Netflix as part of the household account, assuming the account and plan support their use. A student living away from home may need a separate arrangement because Netflix does not allow ordinary account sharing between different households.
The right choice depends on where the student lives and how often they use Netflix. For example, a college student who returns home during school breaks may use Netflix at the family home. But that does not automatically mean Netflix treats a separate college apartment as the same household.
Is Netflix Free for College Students?
No special free Netflix membership exists for college students in the U.S. Netflix also does not currently offer a standard free trial. Its Help Center says customers can sign up for a plan and cancel online, but Netflix does not offer free trials.
Be careful when you see websites promising a “free Netflix student account.” Some offers may come from third parties rather than Netflix itself. Never give your Netflix password or payment information to a website simply because it claims to offer a student deal.
How Can Students Save Money on Netflix?
Without a student discount, students need to look at the regular plans and decide what they actually need.
1. Choose the ad-supported plan
If ads do not bother you, the $8.99 Standard with ads plan costs much less each month than the $19.99 Standard plan or the $26.99 Premium plan. For a student on a tight budget, the difference can add up over a year.
2. Avoid paying for features you do not use
A student who watches Netflix on a laptop or phone may not need 4K video. If you do not own a 4K TV or care about premium picture quality, paying for Premium may not provide much practical value.
3. Review other subscriptions
Students often pay for several streaming services at the same time. Netflix may not seem expensive by itself. But Netflix, music services, cloud storage, gaming subscriptions, and other monthly services can create a much larger bill. Reviewing all subscriptions once every few months can help identify services you rarely use.
Can You Cancel Netflix When You Do Not Need It?
Netflix says customers can change their plan or cancel online at any time. Netflix bills memberships monthly on the date the customer signed up. This can make sense for students who only want Netflix during certain periods.
For example, a student may watch several shows during summer break but barely use Netflix during a busy semester. The student can decide whether the subscription still makes sense for their budget.
What Should Parents Consider Before Paying?
Parents who want to pay for their student’s Netflix should first decide whether the subscription fits their family budget. The monthly price may look small, but subscriptions can become easy to forget.
Parents should also understand the difference between paying for a household plan and paying for an eligible extra member. If the student lives in another household, do not assume that sharing the parent’s password follows Netflix’s current rules. Check the account options before deciding how to set it up.
Summary
Not currently in the United States. Netflix does not list a special student plan. Students can instead choose from the regular Netflix options, with the Standard with ads plan currently starting at $8.99 per month. Parents also do not have to pay for their child’s Netflix subscription. Families can decide who pays based on their own situation. The bigger issue comes when a student moves away for college. Netflix says accounts are meant for people in the same household, so parents and students should understand the current household and extra-member rules before sharing an account between separate homes.
